Top 6 places to visit in Faroe Islands.

Hello loves!

Planning your trip to Faroe Islands? Well, make sure your bucket list includes these top 6 places in Faroe Islands! They are so dreamy, you won’t want to miss them. Before we start, here are some interesting facts about Faroe Islands.

The language spoken is Faroese, which is the official Germanic language originated from Old Norse. However, people also speak Danish, German, and English. It’s population consists of 52,656 people (no wonder we felt alone while hiking) and it’s also home to the famous Puffins birds and more of our fellow creatures that we love.

Make sure you check their travel guidelines during this pandemic. They tend to change frequently so make sure you’re up to date with their regulations. Guidelines for entry

Alrighty then, let’s start! It was late June when we arrived at Vagar, Faroe Islands from Edinburgh, United Kingdom. We picked up our rental car at the airport around 7pm and the sun was brighter than ever. (Side note: at the rental place, you can buy your way to the tunnels!) One of the perks of going in June is the sun doesn’t set until 11:30pm! Isn’t that crazy? Since we had a lot of time in our hands, we decided to drive to one of the most magical places on earth…

1. LAKE SØRVÁGSVATN

Miles: Approximately 4 miles (6.4km) roundtrip

Elevation gain: 987 ft

Location: 62°02’30.9″N 7°11’58.5″W

Level: Easy

Fee? $30 (200 Dkk)

Lake Søvágsvatn is located in the island of Vágar. To get to Lake Søvágsvatn from the airport, you will have to drive to the town called Miõvágur. This cute little town will lead you to a gravel road (not the yellow brick road). Side note, there will be a small parking lot right across the entrance of the trail, that’s where you can park. We started the hike and we were suddenly stopped by this lad named Ritz, stating that we had to buy tickets. Because we were on a somewhat tight budget, we were baffled by the price to hike to the lake. It cost about $30 dollars each to enter, (that’s DKK 200). Anywho, it wasn’t until we started hiking that we realized the money was actually going towards maintaining the trail, which changed our entire perspective on the cost. The hike up took about 45 to 60 minutes. It was a pretty easy trail, the natural beauty surrounding you also helps you forget the time. I highly recommend taking a snack or a meal up there, the view is so amazing you will want to sit there for hours!

2. THREE CUTE TOWNS | SAKSUN, TJØRNUVÍK, AND GJOGV

The town of Saksun is about an hour from the capital, Tórshavn, where we stayed. Each town is about 30-60 minutes apart from each other, so I highly recommend visiting all of them if you can. You will bask in the architectural small homes surrounded by green mountains.

Below is a map of all three town. Click on the image to direct you to google maps.

3. KALLUR LIGHTHOUSE HIKE

Miles: 2.4 miles roundtrip (3.8km)

Location: 62°21'38.9"N 6°47'24.0"W

Elevation gain: 974 Feet

Level: Easy, strong winds

Fee? No

We drove to Kirkviv to get the ferry from Kalsoy to Syroradalur, where we hiked to the Kallur Lighthouse. The ferry cost 200 Danish Krones, (about 30 American dollars) for the car and two people. I highly recommend you arrive as early as possible because it gets packed with cars! Once we arrived, we drove the car out of the ferry to Trøllanes. Omg I almost forgot to tell you, mind the 4 narrow creepy tunnels you have to drive through that only fits one car! We felt like the adventurous Indiana Jones! Don’t worry, there are spaces where cars can wait for you to pass and vise versa. Anywho, once you see the cute little town you will utterly be obsessed with, you can park your car close to the entrance of the trail and start your journey! The hike was about an hour up. We do advise you to be careful no to get to close to the cliff because the winds are pretty strong up there. It was SUPER windy when we were there, so we definitely were very cautious.

4. DRANGARNIR ARCHES

I highly recommend hiking to see these arches. Sadly, we didn’t get to because it was out of our budget. the hike takes most of the day, and it’s a guided tour hike, they don’t let you hike it by yourself. If you do plan to hike this trail, which I’m low-key jealous of if you do, visit this website. Btw, we did get to at least take a picture of the arches when we went to see the Puffins, which is up next!

5. MYKINES, WHERE THE PUFFINS LIVE

Miles: 3.3 mile loop (5.3 km)

Location: 62°06'18.1"N 7°38'39.0"W

Elevation gain: 1,279 Feet

Level: Easy depending on the weather

Fee? Yes, $10 per person for the Ferry roundtrip (60 Dkk) and $40 (250 Dkk) for Hiking Fee (See Mykines.fo for prices and reservations)

We drove to Vágar port to get the Mykines Ferry, hold on, let me rewind and tell you what happened. The day before, we called to see if we could make a reservation to catch the ferry in the morning and they told us they were booked, (this is the place we called to get the reservation: mykines.fo). Make sure you call in advance to reserve your spot in the ferry. Anyway, we asked if we could make the 1 o’clock ferry and they said they were also full! Oh, the agony! But suddenly, the sky opened and the person on the phone said there was a chance we could make it if someone didn’t show up. So there we were, an hour early waiting at the port in the overwhelmingly frigid afternoon. Thanks to God, they was the desperate desire in our eyes to see the puffins, that they let us in at the end. Okay, that’s the end of my storytelling :). The boat ride was about 45 minutes, the boat crew was handing out barf bags because of how choppy the ride was. I’m just thankful we didn’t experience the nausea and need to bark. Now story officially over…We then hiked up to see the puffins up close in their natural habitat. It was an amazing experience, I honestly couldn’t believe it. This amazing locations made my list of places to visit, I want to emphasize the importance of respecting their homes, their land, and follow the rules. You are entering their culture. The boat came back at around 7pm and the captain was nice enough to get close to the Drangarnir Arches! So, we got to see it up close!

6. MÚLAFOSSUR WATERFALL

Miles: Viewpoint

Location: 62°06'27.6"N 7°26'07.6"W

Level: Easy

Fee? No

After we experienced the Puffins, we still had sunlight to go see Múlafossur Waterfall in Vagar Island. It’s a short drive from the airport and the scenic drive is to die for! The waterfall is right next to Gásadalur, a smaller village which was once risked turning into a ghost town back in the day. But, thanks to a new tunnel built in the massive rocks, it survived and drew the attention of many tourists. It’s a one way tunnel to the waterfall and it was very easy to get there. We used our friendly google maps app on our iPhones to get there so nowadays it’s really easy not to get lost.

I hope you have a blast and embrace every moment that will become a memory at Faroe Islands!

Love you all,
