Visit the beautiful San Carlos, Mexico.

Hello loves! Hope you are doing well and staying safe.

To be completely honest, when my husband’s parents invited us to go to San Carlos, Sonora with them for a week I was like, “eh, why not?” I wasn’t uber excited about the trip. But, like always, I love exploring new places so I saw this as an opportunity to travel. ***Remember to always take every opportunity, because like my good friend Paulo Coelho says, “Seize every opportunity that life offers you because, when opportunities go, they take a long time to come back.” Check out more inspiring quotes here! Anywho…San Carlos went beyond my expectations!!! I guess it’s a good thing to have low expectations when traveling because then you will never be disappointed :). Soooo, I’m gonna share with you our trip so you can go and experience what San Carlos has to offer. Let’s goooo!

BEST TIME TO VISIT

We visited the first week of October and the weather was perfect. We had clear days full of sunshine. It was around high 80’s to low 90’s degrees Fahrenheit with a bit of humidity but nothing unbearable. The ocean water was so warm we were in there most of the week because we didn’t want to get out. We called it “Pee Water.” Anyway, the best time to go to San Carlos is from November to April because the weather stays around high 70’s to low 80’s. It starts to get really hot during the months of June to September. So get going now for great weather!

HOW TO GET THERE

DRIVING

To start off, we decided to drive to San Carlos because we visited Dereck’s (my husband) grandparents in Arizona. The drive was not bad at all! We crossed the border to Nogales and took route 15. I honestly had my doubts, but we literally had no problems. We drove approximately 5 hours from Tucson, Arizona to San Carlos, Sonora. I highly recommend to take the toll roads because 1. It’s waaaay faster and 2. The roads are very well maintained. They usually charge at the toll check points but when we went they were only asking for donations. However, things tend to change frequently in Mexico, so I advise you to exchange dollars to pesos before you leave and have small change. They charge about 30-50 pesos (around $2). If you do decide to drive, make the trip during the day, even though it’s safe, I prefer to drive during daylight. See the route we took on the map below.

FLYING

If you rather fly, there’s an airport in Guaymas, Sonora called General José María Yáñez International Airport. You can find fairly good prices, especially if you’re flying from Tijuana, Baja California. I love using Kayak.com when looking for flights.

Whichever you decide, please make sure you don’t forget your passport!

WHERE TO STAY

Now, let’s get into your stay! We stayed at the Sea of Cortez Beach Club for a full week. It’s an absolute beaut! It’s a great place if you want something comfortable and easy beach access. Right now, they have great deals of approximately $60-$90 per night, depending on the type of room you select. I mean, that’s pretty good no? We stayed in a spacious studio room that had a full-size bed, bathroom, ac, full kitchen amenities, and to top it off, an OCEAN VIEW! It was simply magical. The resort has a heated outdoor pool, hot tubs, seating areas, a bbq area, and a place to wash and dry your clothes for free. It’s also part of the Diamond Resort so if you have a timeshare, it’s a great place to use your points. One more thing, if you need to buy groceries, there are grocery stores approximately 5 miles away, super close. I highly recommend staying at the Sea of Cortez Beach Club, we absolutely loved it! FUN ACTIVITIES

We honestly love chilling at the beach most of the week, so we didn’t do as much activities. Our trip was mainly to relax and have fun. Here’s what we did:

SNORKELING

I loved loved the beach access the resort has! We literally walked to the beach every morning from our room. We did take snorkeling masks, which I highly recommend you do because there are a lot of colorful fish by the reef you will not want to miss.

WATER SPORTS RENTALS

We rented two Jet Ski’s from Hongkee Monkee Xtreme Sports for an hour for about $80 each. It was a bit more on the expensive side, but it was definitely cheaper than the prices in the United States. They brought them straight to the resort so we didn’t have to drive anywhere! I highly recommend you rent them because they’re so much fun and you get to see more of San Carlos! Also, if you get lucky, you may be able to see dolphins! We didn’t get to see them, but we heard they tend to come near that area, so you never know! You can also rent kayaks, quads, and banana rides. Here’s their number: +52 622 118 3720.

WALK BY THE BEACH

My husband and I walked around the beach right by the resort for sunset and it was honestly so romantic. The sunsets are just so majestic in San Carlos. If you walk all the way to the left side of the beach you will get a picturesque view of the iconic mountains.

***If you want to know more about different activities you can do near the resort like horseback riding by the beach, renting a yatch, etc., you can ask the receptionist at the front desk and they will give you a list of awesome activities! They were very kind and friendly.

EAT DELICIOUS FOOD

We went to the local Ley superstore to get food to cook since each room has a kitchen with everything you need. So, we took advantage to cook our own meals to save some money. However, if you decide not to cook, the resort has a restaurant to the right side of the pool. We ate there twice because the food was very delicious. We recommend you taste the Fish Veracuzano! My mother-in-law had it and she loved it. I ate their Ceviche de Pescado and it was very good!

MARISCOS EL REY

We were craving fried fish our whole drive down to San Carlos, so we HAD to eat some! We drove to Mariscos El Rey in Guaymas because someone recommended it, so we gave it a try. It was a 15 minute drive from the resort, as you can see in the map below. It was one of the best fried fish I have ever had, so don’t miss out if you like fish. If you are not so fond of fish, they have other dishes in the menu that are also very yummy! Make sure you ask for the salsa that comes with the fish because it’s amazing!
